about

This track was titled after and written around a slogan on the back of a t-shirt that we found at a thrift store, it was for some church thing and had "TOUGHER THAN HELL" in huge letters down the entire back. The line "tougher than hell" was based on Matthew 16:18, which basically says that through the Holy Spirit, not even all of Hell can stop us. I bought the shirt and cut the back out and sewed it onto the back of my jean jacket. Youth pastors loved it.

The riff started as a joke that was shot down by another band that I was in, so I showed it to the guys in The Geeks and they liked it, so we ran with it. It became a song that we played for years to come - literally EVERY SINGLE SHOW. Over the years it took on various forms and interpretations, often being followed by/segued into a very emotive improvisation. We tried to not play it at a couple shows, but we didn't get away with it. It was our "Smells Like Teen Spirit", our "Stairway To Heaven"... only... nowhere near as good.

Side note: Nate had absolutely no patience for what we called "weedley-wee" guitar solos, so I ended up recording the solo and he laid down some accompanying riffs to fill it in. I had to teach him the solo so we couls play this song live.

lyrics

V1: In the spiritual fight, we're keeping score. Satan's won some battles, but he's not gonna win the war. We've got our stripes, we've got our scars, but in the end, victory is ours.

Chorus: GOD HAS MADE US... Tougher than hell (4x)

V2: We are champions, conquerors in Christ. Shine like stars in the universe, when the world is dark, we are the light. We're on the frontlines, about to attack. Satan's won some, now we're pushing back.

Most songs will be ones that I, myself, have performed on, however some I just recorded. ... more
