We are told to go along to get along, as if "getting along" is any sort of end goal in and of itself. Don't upset the herd, keep your head down, make your quota and things will be fine.

Except... you're miserable, you hate your life, you hate your job, and you end each day feeling as though you were somehow just cheated out of another 24 hours of your own life. Too busy just staying alive to actually LIVE. Instead, we numb ourselves with TV, fancy cars, drug and alcohol induced stupors, and shiny object to distract ourselves from the unhappiness inside. Each one, injected into our lives like another little bump of novocain to take the edge off.

Dramatic and idealistic though it might be, this song probably takes a very high spot in my list of songs that I've written as one of my person favorites.

I always wanted to finish this song, but nothing I ever came up with seemed quite right. I guess after ten years, I might as well consider it "done enough". It was hard enough getting Brad Pitt into the vocal booth, let alone writing a breakdown.
